Acting Moldovan president: We will investigate the 7 April riots
The acting Moldovan president and parliament speaker, Mihai Ghimpu, has said that "the new Moldovan leadership is set to bring the investigation into the reasons for the 7 April riots in Chisinau to an end".
He was speaking in the Obiectiv-Europa programme broadcast by the [privately-owned] TV7 channel on 21 September.
"The commission in charge of a probe into the 7 April events which was set up by the decree of [former] President Vladimir Voronin should be dissolved and this will be done in the nearest future. We should appoint a new commission with participation of experts from the European Union and the Council of Europe who expressed their readiness to take part in the investigation of the events," Ghimpu said.
"The investigation should be brought to the end so that society does not split, but learn the truth of what had happened," he stressed. "I suspect that many traces were wiped off, but the truth shou! ld surface."
For his part, premier-designate Vlad Filat told the In profunzime "In depth" programme on the private ProTV channel, "All events that took place on 7 April and later should receive an appropriate assessment."
"It is not ministers and the prime minister that should resign until the new government is formed, but the head of the Security and Information Service and the prosecutor-general. They will be replaced soon. We know that these bodies are taking measures to conceal the traces of the April events. But all those who allowed wrongdoing to take place and who gave the orders, all those who are guilty shall be brought to account according to the law," Filat said.
