About 72% of wells and 5.2% of artesian wells in Moldova contain nitrites, Head of the Hygiene and Epidemiology Chair of N. Testemiţianu University of Medicine and Pharmacy Nicolae Opopol said at a seminar, dedicated to the water quality in Moldova.

Opopol remarked that 30-40 year ago, an increased contents of nitrites was registered only in 25% of well.

“The increased contents of nitrites is conditioned, in the first place, by a human factor, that is to say, by the production and use of mineral fertilizers, the production of aluminum, livestock, functioning of households and primary processing of products”, Opopol said.

He also remarked that 84% out of 132 Moldovan wells does not meet the general mineralization standards, 9.2% has an excessive fluorine contents, 8.2% - chlorine contents and 15.7% - sulphate contents.

In Nicolae Opopol’s words, in order to improve the quality of portable water in Moldova, it is necessary to carry out the sanitary cleaning of villages, to maintain wells in a good technical and sanitary state, to protect them from livestock and human wastes, to regularly clean and chlorinate them and to regularly control water quality.

The Head of the Chair remarked that according to the Government’s resolution on the Program of the Water Supply and Sewage Installation Program in Moldovan localities until 2015, the water of 83% of wells and 50% of water sources are of a poor quality and cannot be used for drinking.

At present 1154 out of 1532 of Moldovan localities or 75% of their total number have water supply system, 630 localities, including 3 municipalities, 52 towns and 572 villages, have also sewage systems.
