A Global Anti-Warming Solution: Paint the Mountains in White
By Diana Ungureanu/ Chisinau/ Moldova.ORG/ -- Ecologists try more and more original ways to fight against the changes that are produced in the climate. For this time, they found a new way to conserve the water and the glaciers, of which depends a large community of shepherds from Peru.
The community lives growing alpaca lamas on the mountain pastures, whose grass growing depends a lot on the quantity of available water, which derives from snow and ice of the mountain peaks.
Eduardo Gol is a specialist that works at the Organization Glaciares Perú and tries to combat this trend. More exactly, he thinks that the rock of dark color absorbs the heat from the sun, while a light-colored surface would reflect the solar radiation, would not warm up so much and would allow the accumulation of snow and ice.
So, the team uses a mixture of water, sand and lime to cover the barren surfaces of rocks.
Although it seems unbelievable, the method gives good results, because Eduardo Gol, measuring the temperature, found that that there where the rocks had been “painted” in white, the temperatures were 10-12 Centigrade lower than before the paint and there were accumulations of ice in the soil.
Until today, there was painted in white a surface of about 15.000 square meters, but the team aims to cover more than 3 billion square meters – action that would cost over 40 billion dollars.
