The Moldova Foundation co-sponsored the Martisor cultural event in Washington, DC held on March 3 at the Goethe Institute.

The event was organized by the representatives of a small community of people in Washington, DC originated from the Republic of Moldova and the Moldovan Embassy in USA.

Several other companies and organizations established by or run by Moldovans -- Moldova House tourist agency, BIP Moldova informational website, Sergey Potorac Law Office, Red Square Club and Spa, Graystone wine imports, Dittberner Telecom Consulting -- also sponsored the event.

The Martisor event included a photography contest, Moldovan pastries (`placinte` in Romanian) contest, traditional dances and music and good wines from Moldova. Valentina Vidrascu, a fashion designer from Moldova who participates at the DC Fashion Week, presented her collection inspired by the Moldovan national costume.

Some 200 people, mostly originated from the Republic of Moldova and their friends from Washington DC, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania and New York, attended.

Martisor is the celebration of beginning of spring, life and love in several countries where Romanians, descendents of Dacians, live, including Moldova. Moldovans give each other on March 1st red-and-white martisors (amulets), wear them throughout March on their lapel or dresses on the left side, close to their hearts.
