Rescuers have said there is little hope for three remaining miners trapped underground in a Chinese coal miner where 16 co-workers perished.

As of Monday the bodies of 16 miners had been pulled from the rubble following the weekend gas explosion in the Jiangxi Province mine, the Xinhua news agency reported.

The accident occurred Saturday at the Jianxin Colliery near Fengcheng City. About 283 miners were working underground when 360 tons of coal fragments filled up a 32.8-yard-long tunnel. So far 24 yards of the tunnel had been cleared.

The Jianxin coal mine is the largest state-owned mine and was established in 1958.

Jiangxi Coal Group Co. informed its insurer to provide compensations to families of the victims. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
